So, What's The History Behind Lo Mein?

Surprisingly, the origingal flour used to make the yellow, chewy noodle that everybody loves, is not wheat flour, but millet grains instead. Specifically, this old recipe comes from the Han dynasty. According to research on this popular Chinese food, variations of of millet, such as broomcorn and foxtail were used. Not long after, the main ingredient changed, which somehow helped Lo Main become one of the world's favorite foods.

What Exactly Is Chinese Lo Mein?

Since the name of this dish is pure Chinese, people may find it hard to remember. What does Lo Mein mean? Directly translated from Chinese, the name is quite interesting. "Lo" means "stirred", and "Mein" means "noodle". It's name is therefore the desription of the basic process of making this famous Chinese food.

Additionally, Lo Mein refers to the way it is prepared. The noodle is dipped into wonton soup to absorb the all the flavor and the seasoning from the soup, before being tossed. This helps Lo Mein become the tasty treat we know it to be.

So Lo Mein And Chow Mein Aren't The Same Thing?

Many of us may consider these two types of foods as the same,  understandably so as the two foods are not that different.

The difference lies not in the ingredients or kinds of flours used to make the noodle, but in the process of preparing it. While Chow Main needs to be stir fried, Lo Mein only asks for a 2 to 3 minutes of boiling and tossing.
