Beautiful nails are nice to look at, showing that you take care of yourself. Unkempt, dirty nails doesn't give off good impressions. Here are some helpful tips you can do at home, to keep your nails healthy and happy.

  1. First of all, keep your hands dry and clean. Bacteria and other germs under your finger nails are a source of diseases. Avoid using harsh chemicals.
  2. Protect you hands when doing chores in or around the house. Gloves or a pair of mittens will do the trick.
  3. Trim you nails every few weeks and certainly don't use your teeth for that. Soak nail in water for a few minutes to soften them up. Then cut your nails in a straight line, follow up by rounding them off at the corners.
  4. File your nails when they are dry. Always file in one direction with a slow and gentle motion. Begin to file from one corner to the center of the nail, then from the center to the other side.
  5. Don't cut your cuticles as they protect the area at the base of the nail. If you insist to mess with them, gently push back the cuticle with a soft wooden stick after showering once a week.
  6. Moisturize nails and cuticles with nutrient-rich oil or hand cream and massage them gently.
  7. Apply a base coat before you paint your nails. This will protect your nails from being stained by the polish and the color will be enhanced and will last longer.
  8. When you applied you nail polish, don't forget to finish with a top coat. This seals the color and gives you that glossy shine. On top of that, it prevents chipping of the polish. Repeat after 3 days to make it last longer.
  9. To remove nail polish, never ever scrape it off, for this will damage your nails. Choose a nail polish remover that contains no acetone because it's very harsh on your nails and skin, drying them out.
  10. What you also always should carry around, besides your moisturizing hand cream, are emery boards. Use one that's not too rough, in case your nails might chip.
  11. Eat food rich in calcium, protein-rich staple like beans, fish, and nuts on a daily base for stronger and healthier nails. Adding vitamin supplements will benefit your body as well.
